2004 - Talk about safety, fix hazards and work together to make your workplace safe
Statistics show that every 25 minutes a WA worker is injured on the job and needs time off and on average, every 16 days a WA worker dies of injuries sustained while earning a living.
These alarming figures highlight the need for workplace managers and decision makers to implement and maintain hazard management to reduce workplace fatalities, injuries and disease.
The ThinkSafe campaign is one of WorkSafe's strategies to encourage employers and occupational safety and health decision makers to consult with employees and take action to fix hazards.
This is reflected in the 2004 campaign slogan "Talk about safety, fix hazards and work together to make your workplace safe".
John Kobelke, Minister for Consumer and Employment Protection launched the campaign on 30 May 2004 at AQWA, Hillarys Boat Harbour, with a demonstration of a device that raises an alarm if someone on a vessel falls overboard.
It continues to target small to medium sized businesses in five specific industry sectors with significant rates of lost time injury and disease: aged care; agriculture; construction; retail; and transport.
There is also a continued focus on six of WorkSafe's priority areas for reducing workplace injuries and disease. These are:
- chemicals and harmful substances;
- electricity;
- manual handling - lifting;
- new and young workers;
- slips and trips; and
- working at heights.
The priority areas are part of the WorkSafe operational strategy involving targeted inspections of workplaces where WorkSafe inspectors give the priority areas special attention. They look at some fundamental safety aspects in relation to each priority area and assess whether or not the workplace complies with the relevant occupational safety and health laws.
The 2004 campaign utilises a range of communication methods including:
- State wide television advertising - a touch of drama is utilised in the television advertisement, which is set in a workplace at night, where hazards are lurking;
- Five radio advertisements - one for each targeted industry;
- Direct mail out of five revised publications to the targeted industries;
- Distribution of a 2004 ThinkSafe campaign poster; and
- Promotion of the 1800 Hazard hotline - 1800-429-273 to assist callers seeking 2004 ThinkSafe campaign information products.
Advertising for the campaign commenced on 30 May and ends on 21 August. All television and radio advertising is broadcast to both metropolitan and regional area of the state.
