2003 - Watch out for each other and work safe

The Hon. John Kobelke, Minister for Consumer and Employment Protection, launched the 2003 ThinkSafe campaign on 14 April at Specialised Container Transport in Forrestfield.

The 2003 campaign aims to consolidate the objectives of the 2002 campaign and encourages employers and occupational safety and health decision makers to consult with employees.

Both consultation and the target audience (employers, workplace safety and health decision-makers and employees) are reflected in the 2003 campaign slogan "Watch out for each other and work safe".

The campaign targets small to medium sized businesses in five specific industry sectors with significant rates of lost time injury and disease:

  • aged care;
  • agriculture;
  • construction;
  • retail; and
  • transport.

The 2003 campaign again specifically supports six of WorkSafe's priority areas for reducing workplace injuries and disease. These are:

  • chemicals and harmful substances;
  • electricity;
  • manual handling - lifting;
  • new and young workers;
  • slips and trips; and
  • working at heights.

The campaign will continue to encourage the practical implementation of hazard management in high-risk workplaces to reduce workplace fatalities, injuries and disease, in particular those related to the priority areas above.

The majority of workplace fatalities, injuries and diseases are not due to carelessness or unforseen circumstances. They are almost always a result of unsafe work practices including lack of training, supervision, consultation, planning, safety management systems and maintenance. Often there is not one clear cause for an incident but a combination of factors.

Consideration is given to the tone of ThinkSafe advertising, as people are more likely to change their attitude and their behaviour if they are not threatened and they see some benefit.

Advertising for the campaign commences on 13 April and ends on 28 June. All television and radio advertising is broadcast to both metropolitan and regional area of the state. The 2003 campaign utilises a range of communication methods including:

  • State wide television advertising - there are two television advertisements, each with two scenarios: one focuses on falls from heights in the construction industry and electrical hazards in the agricultural sector; and the other covers slips and trips in the retail industry and lifting in the aged care sector;
  • Four radio advertisements - covering reversing of vehicles in the transport industry; falls from height in the construction industry; electrical hazards in the agricultural sector; and slips and trips in the retail industry.
  • Distribution of a generic publication The First Step guide, which has been revised and expanded to incorporate the 2002 publication Managing common workplace hazards.
  • Direct mail out of five new publications:
    A look at hazards in accommodation for the aged and nursing homes;
    A look at hazards in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industry;
    A look at hazards in the construction industry;
    A look at hazards in the retail industry; and
    A look at hazards in the transport and storage industry.
  • Distribution of a 2003 ThinkSafe campaign poster, with the slogan - "Watch out for each other and work safe".
  • Promotion of the 1800 Hazard hotline - 1800-429-273 to assist callers seeking 2003 ThinkSafe campaign information products.
