Amendment to the National List of Exemptions - chrysotile asbestos
On 17 October 2007, the Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC) declared an amendment to Schedule 2 of the National Model Regulations for the Control of Workplace Hazardous Substances [NOHSC:1005(1995)]. This amendment extends Exemption 4 of the National List of Exemptions until 31 December 2010.
The National List of Exemptions provides an effective and consistent national approach to the management of exemptions to the workplace ban on the use of chrysotile asbestos. Exemption 4 enables the Australian Defence Organisation (ADO) to apply to use chrysotile-containing parts and components that are mission-critical and for which there is no known suitable non-chrysotile alternative.
The National List of Exemptions is covered in regulation 5.32A of Western Australia's Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996. In keeping with the ASCC's decision to extend Exemption 4 of the National List of Exemptions, an amendment has been made to subregulation 5.32A(7) to reflect the new expiry date of 31 December 2010 for the ADO exemption scheme.
