Family Farm Safety
Help us reduce child deaths and injuries on WA farms
Around 600 children are admitted to hospital and about 30 children die each year as a result of accidents on Australian farms. Twenty percent of these fatalities involve children under 15. For children under four, the key cause of death is drowning in dams, creeks, rivers or tanks. For children aged between five and fifteen, these tragedies usually involve ATV's or farm bikes, tractors, other farm machinery or horses.
Using the Family Farm Safety Kit in your school will help reduce the likelihood of such accidents and injuries to children who live on farms in your community. The Family Farm Safety Kit, for use by year 3 teachers, incudes:
- a Teacher's pack (with activity outcomes, teacher's notes, and activities) [PDF 538k];
- a Teacher's survey form [PDF 174k]; and
- a brochure for parents [PDF 381k].
The materials were developed by the WorkSafe Division of the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection to help educate rural children about some of the most common hazards on farms.
