Role of inspectors

WorkSafe, through its inspectors, is responsible for the firm and fair enforcement of the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996.

Inspectors are trained occupational safety and health practitioners appointed under the Act to enforce the law, assist with the resolution of issues in workplaces, and to provide advice to employers and employees on how best to improve work safety and health performance.  They also investigate workplace fatalities and serious injuries, conduct industry intervention campaigns, and work to raise awareness of workplace hazards with the public.
