Petrol - New Price Hike Hits

Issue Date:  -  Wednesday, 17 September 2008

Tomorrow (18 September 2008) Caltex and Coles Express are increasing the price of unleaded petrol (ULP) by up to 17 cents per litre (cpl) to 159.9 cpl at a number of their metropolitan sites.

The average price of ULP across Perth tomorrow is 148.8 cpl, and more than 150 service stations will still be selling petrol for less than 145 cpl.

FuelWatch is encouraging motorists to buy their petrol today or tomorrow while cheaper prices are still available and to check petrol prices before they buy.

Motorists are encouraged to buy their fuel from retailers who maintain cheaper prices.

In the Eastern suburbs tomorrow the cheapest fuel can be purchased from Caltex Woolworths Forrestfield for 142.3 cpl.

In the Northern suburbs tomorrow the cheapest fuel can be purchased from Caltex Woolworths Morley Galleria for 142.1 cpl.

And South of the river tomorrow the cheapest fuel can be purchased from Gull Warnbro for 142.3 cpl.

Background Notes:

• For the past 8 weeks, Perth petrol prices have been, on average, more than 4 cpl lower than other Australian Capital cities.

• Fuel prices in Perth are primarily influenced by the price of refined petrol in Singapore and the USD/AUD exchange rate, not the day to day price of crude oil.

• Adverse exchange rate movements have limited the effect falling international prices have had at the pump. In July, the AUD/USD exchange rate touched 0.98.  The exchange rate is now below 0.80.

• Perth has not had a regular price cycle since May 2008. Recent movements in retail prices may indicate the return of a petrol price cycle. Price cycles are a retail marketing strategy used by the oil companies and do not reflect movements in international prices.

Motorists can find the best prices before buying by checking the FuelWatch website at www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au , telephoning 1300 55 08 08 or by watching the nightly news on Channel 7 for the FuelWatch segment.
