Faulty dishwashers cause fires
Issue Date: - Wednesday, 8 October 2008
EnergySafety is urging consumers not to use some models of Electrolux, Westinghouse and Dishlex dishwashers because appliances have caught fire.
EnergySafety Acting Director Ken Bowron said manufacturer Electrolux was conducting a voluntary recall of the models, which were sold after 1 April 2007.
Mr Bowron said a fault with the wire connector within the appliances had resulted in some dishwashers overheating and catching fire.
“Across Australia, more than 100 incidents have been reported of these dishwashers overheating or causing fire damage to homes – including two cases in Western Australia,” Mr Bowron said.
“Electrolux has repaired or recovered nearly 80 per cent of the units sold. However, there are still about 5,000 dishwashers throughout Australia that need to be located.
“I urge anyone who has purchased one of these dishwashers since April 2007 to immediately check the model and serial number to determine if it is one of the dishwashers subject to the recall,” Mr Bowron said.
“This is a very serious fault and consumers with an affected model should stop using it immediately, unplug the unit, and contact Electrolux.”
The dishwashers subject to the recall are Electrolux, Electrolux Dishlex and Westinghouse brands within the serial number range of 70700000 to 72400000, sold after 1 April 2007.
Mr Bowron said consumers should contact Electrolux on the toll free number 1800 001 218 between 6am and 7pm on weekdays or between 7am and 1 pm on Saturdays to arrange to have the dishwasher repaired free-of-charge at home.
