Portable swimming pool danger - Christmas gift could give disaster
Issue Date: - Friday, 28 November 2008
With the warmer weather coming and people starting to look for suitable family Christmas gifts, the Consumer Protection Commissioner is issuing a warning about portable swimming pools that are being featured in press advertisements.“There are a variety of these relatively low cost, inflatable swimming pools currently being promoted to families as Christmas ideas,” Consumer Protection Commissioner Anne Driscoll said.
“Pools of any type with a depth of 300mm or more are required by law to be secured by isolation fencing and have correct locking mechanisms on gates.
“Consumers thinking about purchasing these products should take these facts into consideration, as local authorities can issue fines for non-compliance.
“It would be a dreadful way to remember Christmas if a child was to drown in one of these pools if it was not properly secured. The best way to ensure safety is for children to be supervised at all times and that all instructions for use on these products are carefully adhered to,” she said.
The Royal Life Saving Society Australia recommends that parents or guardians of children who are going to have access to swimming pools learn first aid so they can assist in the event of an emergency.
“With prices as low as $100 it is likely that many may see these pools as a cheap and entertaining Christmas gift, especially in today’s economic climate.
“We strongly encourage consumers to think about where they intend putting a pool and importantly, the safety aspects of any purchase,” Ms Driscoll said.
