More jobs for young people in WA

Issue Date:  -  Thursday, 11 October 2007

Western Australia offers more employment opportunities for young people than anywhere else in Australia.

According to statistics released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today, Western Australia’s youth unemployment figure is 10.5%, significantly lower than the national rate of 16.6%.

Labour Relations Executive Director Susan Barrera said the figure is extremely encouraging for the future of Western Australia’s economy.

“Youth unemployment in Western Australia has dropped significantly from last month.  This means that young people in Western Australia are finding it easier to get full time jobs.

“We are also maintaining consistently low unemployment rates for all workers, not just youth, which shows WA is continuing to grow,” Ms Barrera said

The state unemployment figure for all workers is 3.5%, lower than the national rate of 4.2%, and the lowest of all the states.

Ms Barrera said Western Australia has consistently had a lower unemployment rate than other Australian states for the past six months.

“We are leading the country in terms of finding and creating jobs.  This is excellent news for Western Australia’s ongoing economic prosperity.”
