Itinerant builder hits the Northwest.

Residents in the North West of our state are warned to steer clear of travelling traders who offer to perform various services such as internal and external cladding.

Consumer Protection in Karratha is currently investigating a number of complaints about an itinerant trader over quality of work, refund issues and lengthy delays.

“Two common risks are not getting what you pay for and the trader leaving town after the job is finished denying consumers any recourse. This can be especially difficult to remedy in isolated areas”, Regional Officer Marie Bingham said today.

Itinerant traders frequently have no qualifications for the work they undertake and this can lead to damage to property as well as a poor quality work being done. This type of work often does not require a registered builder, therefore escaping the obligations of the Builders Registration Board.

They normally operate by door knocking, demanding an immediate deposit via credit card or cash, and do not willingly provide details of their operating address, preferring to work via mobile phone numbers.

“Ask friends, family and neighbours to recommend local traders they have had good service from and check local business directories and your community’s newspaper.

Get at least three quotes, bearing in mind things like travel time, no call out fees and rubbish removal and contact Consumer Protection to find out if the trader is registered.

Make sure the trader has a proper street address and enquire if they are a member of a professional body, as these often require their members to meet certain standards of service. Most importantly, don’t sign anything until you are sure you want to get the work done”, Ms Bingham said.

Those approached by an itinerant trader can report the details to Consumer Protection on 1300 30 40 54.
