'Free' security systems trigger alarms.

Inquiries to the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection from people concerned about so-called free or cheap home security systems have seen the Consumer Protection Commissioner Patrick Walker issue a caution to those thinking of taking up the offer.

"There is no such thing as a free lunch and consumers should be equally wary when being offered a free security system for their home.

Although security providers may provide and install equipment such as alarms at no cost, there will almost certainly be some provision in the contract for them to charge for providing monitoring services often over long periods", Mr. Walker said.

Consumers should be alert to monitoring conditions being part of the contract and ensure that they are aware of the implications.

Like any other trader, security providers must not mislead or make false statements about the products and services they offer or the price consumers will ultimately pay.

"The Department has in the past investigated security companies that use high pressure sales tactics and fear of crime to persuade consumers to sign up, and we are keeping a close eye on the situations being brought to our attention with these most recent offers", Mr. Walker said.

If considering a home security system you should:

* Get professional independent advice first, such as from the Safer WA Committee on telephone number 9356 0555
* Contact your insurance company
* Shop around and get at least three quotes on the same level of service

"Never, ever, sign anything until you fully understand and agree with the terms of any contract as it is very difficult to get out of the agreement once you have. Do not be pressured to sign on the spot and take the paperwork home to read at your leisure and sleep on it if you like", the Commissioner said.

Consumers who consider they have been misled or have concerns about "free" security systems should contact Consumer Protection on telephone 1300 30 40 54 as soon as possible.
