Consumers warned about local insulation firm

The Ministry of Fair Trading today warned consumers about the possible consequences of dealing with a man who instals poor-quality wool insulation in the roofs of houses.

Fair Trading Commissioner Patrick Walker said the Ministry had received a rash of complaints from consumers saying the insulation contained sheep manure, seeds and in some cases was infested with insects.

Terence John Loftus has traded under the names of Loftus Country Wool, All Seasons Insulation, Dr Feel Cool, Total Wool and Cool Seasons Insulation Services.

Mr Loftus has been known to also use the names of Terry John, Terry Johns and Terry Loftus.

"The trader has used low-quality, scoured locks and crutchings instead of higher-quality wool insulation and, as a result, customers have complained about a terrible odour," Mr Walker said.

"There are obviously also concerns about the health risks of low-grade wool insulation."

"We've received eight complaints in recent months, but a greater concern is that Fair Trading has been unable to contact Mr Loftus in order to convince him to change his practices," he said.

Fair Trading had linked the trader to at least five separate Perth addresses.

The eight consumers had spent a total of about $9000 in either having the insulation moved or treated by pest control operators.

"I am naming Terence John Loftus and his often unregistered business names because he has apparently continued to trade, exposing more West Australians to unnecessary trauma and financial loss, with no hope of redress" Mr Walker said.

For every complaint Fair Trading receives, it was likely there were more dissatisfied clients in the community, Mr Walker said.

Consumers who had experienced problems with Mr Loftus are encouraged to contact Fair Trading for advice.
