Patrick Walker has been appointed the new Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Fair Trading.
Making the announcement, Premier Richard Court said Mr Walker was a very worthy appointment.
"The selection panel convened by the Commissioner for Public Sector Standards recommended Mr Walker very highly for the position," the Premier said.
Mr Walker is currently the CEO of the City of Subiaco, a role he has held since 1993, and has held senior management roles in local government for many years giving him a strong background in administration.
"In his new role, Mr Walker will have to balance the interests of consumers and traders, and will have to ensure provisions that allow anti-competitive practices are removed from State legislation," the Premier said.
"I am sure Mr Walker will provide clear leadership and be an asset to Fair Trading."
The role of CEO of Fair Trading has been vacant since September 1996 when Dr Chris Whitaker was permanently appointed as Director General of the Department of Transport.
Mr Court paid tribute to Mark Bodycoat who had been acting in the role and acknowledged his good work.
"Mr Bodycoat has distinguished himself as an capable and caring manager who had a strong knowledge of the Ministry," the Premier said.
