Community views sought on gift cards

Comment on this discussion paper and tell us about issues you have encountered when buying or using gift cards. With the gift card market estimated to be worth around $1.5 billion, these cards are a popular gift choice for birthdays and Christmas. The cards can offer many benefits, including providing the flexibility for friends and family to choose their own present. Gift cards can, however be subject to long and confusing terms and conditions.

Over the last few years consumer agencies have received complaints about a range of issues related to gift cards, including limited timeframes for use, restrictions on using the cards (for low-value purchases only) and the limited rights of gift card holders in the event of a business being sold or becoming insolvent.
