Qualifications, trade certificate or experience required to obtain certificate

To obtain a repairer's certificate you will need to be qualified, have a trade certificate or have substantial experience.

The qualifications you may have will include a Certificate II or Certificate III from a recognised training organisation such as a TAFE or an RTO (Registered Training Organisation) and/or a Trade Certificate or equivalent such as a Final Certificate.

Alternatively, you may be granted a repairer's certificate because you have sufficient experience.

A combination of qualifications and experience can also qualify you for a certificate.

You must be sufficiently qualified to carry out each class of repair work to which your application relates.

The points system for approving certificates

A 'points system' is used to determine a person's qualification for a class of repair.

You will need at least 100 points to qualify for each class of repair.

As stated above, the base requirement is a relevant Certificate II or Certificate III trade qualification or an equivalent trade certificate.

However, we will consider a combination of things for you to be able to reach 100 points. Some of these are:

  • A relevant formal qualification and/or trade certificate (completed apprenticeship) including those awarded by other States and Territories);
  • Any relevant and recent motor vehicle repair work experience;
  • Current membership of a relevant professional industry body;
  • References about your ability and experience from your employer(s) or customers, including overseas experience in limited circumstances;
  • A certification test conducted by a Registered Training Organisation approved by the Commissioner; and
  • An Australian Recognised Trade Certificate, which is issued after an overseas qualification has been assessed.

You need to provide all relevant evidence supporting your qualification for a Motor Vehicle Repairer's Certificate.

What if I don't have enough points? - Provisional Certificate

If you or your employer believes that you are sufficiently skilled to become a certified repairer but you do not have enough points, you can still apply for a certificate.

If the Commissioner considers you have the skills or are capable of acquiring those skills, we may issue you with a provisional certificate for a fixed period.
