Frequently asked questions
Do I need a motor vehicle repairer's certificate?
Generally, if you run your own motor vehicle repair business, supervise the repair work of others, or carry out repair work unsupervised, you will require a repairer’s certificate.
What type of repair work needs a certified repairer?
Certified repairers are required to supervise most types (classes) of automotive repair work including general mechanical repair for heavy vehicles (trucks and buses) and light duty vehicles (cars) and motor bikes, and a range of ancillary repairers such as exhaust fitters, auto electricians and tyre fitters.
What type of repair work can I supervise?
As a certified repairer you can only supervise repair work for the particular class or repairs for which you are qualified. You may apply for more than one class of repair work if you hold the appropriate qualifications and these will be endorsed on your certificate.
How do I qualify to be granted a repairer's certificate?
To be granted a certificate you will be required to have sufficient formal qualifications, experience, memberships of professional organisations and references or a combination of those requirements. A points system is used to determine a person's qualification for a class of repair. You will need at least 100 points to qualify for each class of repair.
What if I don't have enough points? - Provisional Certificate
If you or your employer believes that you are sufficiently skilled to become a certified repairer but you do not have enough points, you can still apply for a certificate.
If the Commissioner considers you have the skills or are capable of acquiring those skills, the Commissioner may issue you with a provisional certificate, which will allow you to run your own licensed business or supervise others until you qualify.
What about conditions and restrictions?
The Commissioner can impose conditions and restrictions on your repairer's certificate at any time.
