New set of national laws were introduced on 1 January 2011

Australia will have a single, national consumer law: the Australian Consumer Law (ACL).  It includes:

  • unfair contract terms;
  • consumer rights when buying goods and services, which includes warranties;
  • national product safety laws;
  • unsolicited consumer agreements, e.g. door-to-door sales and other direct marketing;
  • lay-by agreements; and
  • new penalties, enforcement powers and consumer redress options, which currently apply nationally.
