WA's information technology and telecommunications industry

The Western Australian information technology and telecommunications industry is innovative and productive, and many companies are recognised as global leaders in specific areas.  With its ingenuity and as an enabler to productivity in other industries, the local information technology and telecommunications industry has the potential to become a fundamental economic driver for the State’s future development.

WA's information technology and telecommunications industry is highly dynamic and innovative, with enormous potential for growth, higher export levels, increased employment and the development of new creative industries. Other factors, such as the relatively low cost structure, proximity to vital Asian markets and the Government’s commitment to expanding business opportunities, will continue to contribute to the rapid development of the information technology and telecommunications industry base in this State.

As information technology and telecommunications is involved in nearly every industry within the Western Australian economy, there has been significant growth in the number of Western Australians employed in information technology and telecommunications. This growth in employment in the WA information technology and telecommunications sector has outstripped the national average, indicating the State’s increasing contribution to the knowledge economy. This has resulted in a significant increase in the State’s information technology and telecommunications capability, especially in the areas of software and services development, equipment exports and research and development
