Our role
The State Government is committed to fostering the growth and development of the renewable energy and environment sectors of Western Australia (WA).
The department is actively working with industry associations, private companies and local, State and Federal Government agencies to assist in the growth of these knowledge and sustainability-based industries.
Renewable energy and clean technology directory WA
The Renewable energy and clean technology directory of innovations and capabilities in WA (PDF 2.2 MB) lists companies and research facilities located in Western Australia which are developing and implementing solutions in the renewable energy and clean technology sectors.
The directory aims to promote at local, national and international level innovative organisations contributing to mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, supply of competitive alternative energy, clean fossil fuel energy and energy management technologies.
To add your organisation to future versions of the directory, please use the form at the back of the directory.
Biofuels taskforce
The Western Australian Government established a biofuels taskforce to advise on a range of issues concerning development and use of biofuels in the State. The terms of reference for the taskforce require it to work with Government and industry by providing recommendations and strategies
on:
- Reviewing and addressing the opportunities and impediments to the development of a biofuels industry in WA
- Increasing consumer acceptance and use of biofuels
- Using biofuels as cost-effective alternatives to petrol/diesel, particularly in regional areas
- Maximising WA's participation in providing biofuels to meet the Commonwealth's renewable fuel target
- Maximising WA's opportunity to leverage funds from Commonwealth funding programs related to biofuels
- Provision of a consultation mechanism with industry and the Federal Government
- Promoting a whole of government and industry approach to the use of biofuels.
The Economics of biofuels for WA report (PDF 550 KB) is one input into the work of the taskforce, dealing with the economics of the sector in the State and the potential implications for WA of expanded production and use of biofuels in the State and the whole country. The report does not directly address the arguments for or against government support for biofuels. Rather it considers the likely longer term viability of production in Western Australia under a number of scenarios, and the implications for the local economy of expanded production and use.
Study on potential of CO2 geosequestration in the Collie and Perth Basins of WA
The Collie Industry and Coal Industry Future Group has taken a major step towards clean coal technology with a regional study identifying a potential location for geosequestration in the South West.
This study has identified an area south of Lake Clifton and 50 kilometres from the South West coal industry that is worth further investigation.
Geosequestration is the capture, compression, transport and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) from major energy-related sources into geological formations between 800m and several kilometres beneath the surface of the earth. CO2 is captured, separated, compressed and transported by pipeline and injected into suitable geological sites.
For more information refer to the Regional study on potential CO2 geosequestration in the Collie Basin and the Perth Basin of Western Australia - executive summary (PDF 1.7 MB).
