Types of employment and subcontracting

Employers need the right mix of employment arrangements to suit their business needs.

There are a number of employment arrangements available, including:

  1. full time employment;
  2. part time employment;
  3. casual employment;
  4. fixed term or contract employment;
  5. apprenticeships;
  6. traineeships; and
  7. probationary work.

A brief explanation of these arrangements is available in the Types of employment publication [pdf, 335 KB].

Subcontracting

Subcontractors are not employees.  There are distinct differences between the two arrangements.

The law treats subcontractors and employees differently, and it can prove very costly if employers get it wrong.

Whether an individual is an employee or a subcontractor is determined by the nature of the arrangement. A brief explanation of the differences between the two arrangements is available in the Subcontractor or employee publication [pdf, 91.5 KB].
