Services for Young Workers

Information and services for first time workers

Your First Job

Your First Job is a free online resource to learn about the employment relationship

Labour Relations Education Services provides a range of services for young workers, including telephone advice, one-on-one meetings, and seminars on request.

Young workers are particularly vulnerable in the workplace because of their lack of knowledge about their employment rights and responsibilities.  They often work in casual and part time jobs in industries such as retail and hospitality, where they can be exposed to bullying, harassment and underpayment of wages.

Your First Job has been developed after extensive consultation with teachers and students. The modules cover the spectrum of the employment relationship, from applying for a job, getting a job, dealing with issues in the workplace, and ending the employment relationship.

The modules are easy to use and discuss the employment relationship in easy to understand concepts and language.

Tips for Young Workers

If you are attending an interview, it is a good idea to ask some questions about the job you are interested in.

When discussing a job offer, don't be be afraid to
ask:

  1. the name of the business and what it does
  2. the type of work you will be doing
  3. the type of employment (full time, part time, casual)
  4. if you will receive any induction or training to perform the job
  5. what hours of work including start and finish times
  6. what the pay and conditions will be
  7. the name of any award/agreement covering the job
