- Pool safety saves children’s lives
- WA laws require pool owners to enclose their pool with a barrier that meets standards
Following the recent tragic death of a toddler found in a backyard swimming pool, Building Commissioner Mr Peter Gow has reminded pool owners and anyone thinking about installing a pool to ensure that adequate pool fencing is in place.
“I extend my deepest sympathy to the toddler’s family on this very sad occasion,” Mr Gow said.
“Pool safety is important all year round, and even more so during the summer months when splashing in the pool is a big temptation for the kids.
“I urge pool owners to be vigilant about maintaining pool fencing to stop young children entering the pool area when not supervised by an adult.
“The law in WA places responsibility on the owner or occupier to ensure that a compliant barrier is provided around the pool at all times to restrict the movement of young children into the pool area.”Further information about pool safety and barrier requirements is available from the Building Commission Division of the Department of Commerce.
