Buy My Duck winners

Issue Date:  -  Tuesday, 15 September 2009

Consumer Protection has announced the winners of this year’s competition in schools to raise young people’s awareness of consumer issues.

This is the third year Consumer Protection has run the Buy My Duck contest which is open to all schools within Western Australia.

This year’s competition focused on designing a young person’s shopping guide, with the emphasis on mobile phone purchases.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Anne Driscoll, said the standard of this year’s entries was very high, showing a marked improvement in young people’s knowledge and understanding of consumer rights, especially the importance of researching, budgeting and the return of unsatisfactory goods.

The competition was broken into junior primary years 3 to 5, upper primary years 6 and 7, and high school years 8 to 12.

The winner in the junior section was Wanneroo Primary school, where three students designed a colourful hand drawn poster highlighting the importance of budgeting.  It used items such as Teddy Bears and potato chips to decide the balance of what was important, what was affordable, and to think before you buy.

The winner of the upper primary was the Padbury Catholic Primary school where a grade seven student developed a workbook that contained puzzles, quizzes and mazes, to provide information on warranties and refunds, consumer scams and buying on the internet.

The secondary school award for the metropolitan area was won by Willetton Senior High School, with a group of three students creating a board game which covered customer service, technical service and statutory warranties.

The regional secondary school award went to Nagle Catholic College in Geraldton where a year ten student wrote a “Choose your own adventure” story about two girls on a shopping expedition, and all the pitfalls in trying to ensure they get value for their money.

The winning entries each received $250 to spend. Each school receives $2,000 for their school resource centre.
