Baby rattles pulled from shop shelves amid choking fears

Issue Date:  -  Friday, 25 September 2009

Consumer Protection is urging parents in WA to check their children’s toys after tests found five types of baby rattle could choke a child.

A total of 611 of the individually-packed neon rattles, which are shaped either like a key, guitar, musical note, saxophone or tambourine, are known to have been supplied to WA stores between March and September this year.

Director of Industry and Consumer Services David Hillyard said the product recall follows the results of independent testing

“The testing confirmed all five rattles failed the shape, size and strength requirements of the Australian Standard.

“When dropped, four out of five, excluding the guitar rattle, released small parts which could be inhaled by a child.

“All parents should check their toy cupboards and remove these rattles before a child is injured.”

The rattles should be returned to the store where they were bought for a full refund.

In total 4,200 of the toy rattles were distributed to discount shops across Australia this year.
