Winners plucked in duck contest
Issue Date: - Wednesday, 12 November 2008
The winners of the Buy My Duck 2008 school competition have been decided.
Over 300 students, from years three to twelve, participated in this year’s competition, sponsored by Community Newspapers, and shared in a prize pool of $14,000.
Buy My Duck is a competition that has been developed as a school based program to enhance young consumers’ knowledge and understanding of their rights and responsibilities.
Research indicates that young people are unaware of their rights and responsibilities as consumers, and this is making them increasingly vulnerable in the marketplace.
“The Buy My Duck 2008 competition required students to create ‘A survival guide to shopping’ for young consumers,” Consumer Protection Commissioner Anne Driscoll said.
“This year’s entries included multimedia movies, interviews with managers of retail shops, comic books, posters, brochures, electronic games and a board game. The entries were very creative and innovative.
“Over 300 students participated in the competition. These young consumers have demonstrated a great awareness of the possible consuming pitfalls they may face,” she said.
Winners received $250 personally and $2,000 for their school’s learning centre.
The Buy My Duck 2008 competition included a website that provided curriculum-based Western Australian teaching resources.
Two teachers received ‘Teacher Incentive Awards’ for their support of the competition. The 2008 Teacher Incentive Awards were presented to Ms Rebecca Watkins of Glencoe Primary School and Ms Melinda Donovan of Merredin Senior High School.
