Workplace Relations Coup

Issue Date:  -  Monday, 19 May 2008

A passionate advocate in the workplace relations debate is to be the main guest speaker at a Labour Relations forum in Perth next week.

Acting Executive Director of Labour Relations with the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection, Mr Bob Horstman, said he was delighted the Department had secured the services of Professor Ron McCallum to speak at the seminar on the 26th of May.

Mr Horstman said Professor McCallum’s visit would provide the opportunity for a rare insight into the thinking of one of the foremost authorities on workplace relations.

“It is a critical period in Australia’s workplace relations, a time of reshaping of the industrial landscape.  Professor McCallum’s topic, “Fairness and Balance in Industrial Bargaining”, addresses crucial issues from the perspective of both employers and employees”.

Professor McCallum was Dean of Law at the University of Sydney for five years until September last year. He has advised governments and authored many publications including co-authorship of the Australian Charter of Employment Rights produced by the Australian Institute of Employment Rights which is co-sponsoring the seminar.

Mr Horstman said it was a singular opportunity for WA practitioners to hear from a national expert on how to create fair, flexible and more productive workplaces.

The seminar will be held at the Perth Zoo function centre.
