Dangerous North Pole Christmas Train Set recalled

Issue Date:  -  Wednesday, 3 December 2008

Consumer Protection is warning consumers that the 27-piece North Pole Express Christmas train set (item number of 62170) should not be used, after discovering that a faulty switch causes the train’s batteries to overheat.

Consumer Protection Commissioner Anne Driscoll said the department had been working with retailers and customers since it became aware of the problem last week.

“I am pleased that the retailers involved agreed to stop selling the product and are in the process of conducting a nationwide recall,” Ms Driscoll said.

“I urge anyone who has purchased the train set not to use it and return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

Ms Driscoll said that there is evidence that the problem is caused by a faulty volume switch that, if not set correctly, causes a short circuit, which in turn causes the batteries to overheat and melt the casing.

She said the problem posed a potential fire hazard and possible burn injuries.

She said that inquiries have revealed that K-Mart and Target are the only two retailers in Western Australia who have sold this product.

Consumers who have difficulties in getting refunds or require further information about the train set should contact Consumer Protection on 1300 30 40 54 or by email consumer@docep.wa.gov.au.
