New information pack to help new business

Issue Date:  -  Tuesday, 5 August 2008

In recognition of the many challenges new businesses face, Consumer Protection has launched a new information pack designed to take some of the guesswork out of running a successful new venture.

Every new business that registers with Consumer Protection is now receiving a new business pack, a toolkit to help business owners understand their consumer protection responsibilities and avoid costly problems.

The information pack, which is also available online at www.docep.wa.gov.au, provides a comprehensive guide for new businesses on many aspects of consumer protection including:

  • information about warranties and refunds;
  • developing an effective complaints handling system;
  • product safety matters;
  • scams; and
  • tips to ensure advertising is not misleading or deceptive.

Consumer Protection Commissioner Anne Driscoll said that with about 30,000 new businesses registered in WA every year, it is vital that business operators understand their rights and obligations, and those of their customers.

"The information in the packs will help business owners to avoid potential problems as they launch their new ventures," Ms Driscoll said.

"It will also guide them in the future as matters affecting their customers and employees arise in their day-to-day activities," Ms Driscoll said.

The pack contains relevant information and advice to help business operators make the right decisions for a successful business, including developing good customer relationships, making the workplace safe and providing fair employment conditions.

Contact details for Consumer Protection’s Advice Line, Labour Relations, Worksafe, relevant licensing authorities and other state and federal government agencies are also contained in the pack.
