WorkSafe investigates death of worker
WorkSafe is investigating the work-related death of a 36-year-old Gosnells man at Bedfordale this morning.
The man was operating a 14-tonne multi-tyre road roller when it rolled off an embankment and he was crushed.
Inspectors arrived at the site soon after the incident, and will interview witnesses and continue to investigate in cooperation with the Major Crash Investigation Unit of WA Police.
WorkSafe WA Commissioner Nina Lyhne said today’s death was the 16th in WA in six years in incidents involving mobile plant.
“On average a further 880 workers each year in WA are injured seriously enough for them to require time off work,” Ms Lyhne said.
“The high rate of deaths and injuries has prompted workplace safety and health authorities across Australia and New Zealand to conduct a campaign focusing on the safety of mobile plant and workers in the immediate vicinity.
“Mobile plant is an area of significant concern for safety authorities, and it is tragic that a worker has lost his life while this issue is being closely examined.”
WorkSafe thoroughly investigates all serious work-related injuries and deaths in WA with a view to preventing future incidents of a similar nature.
WorkSafe WA Commissioner Nina Lyhne said any work-related death was a tragedy, and relayed her sincere condolences to the man’s family.
