Portable gas refrigerator danger
Issue Date: - Monday, 24 December 2007
Owners of portable gas-powered refrigerators have been warned not to operate them in enclosed spaces.
“These fridges can give off small amounts of carbon monoxide when they run on LPG and operated in enclosed areas,” EnergySafety Principal Gas Supply Engineer Cornelis De Groot said today.
“The carbon monoxide can accumulate in areas such as cars, caravans, boats, tents, or indoors,” Mr De Groot said. “This gas is odourless, colourless and can be fatal when inhaled, even in low concentrations.
“Always use your gas-powered fridge in a well ventilated, open area.
“Of course, portable fridges can be used safely in enclosed areas when connected to and operated on mains or 12 volt battery power only.”
EnergySafety pointed out that, with many families going on holidays, portable fridges would be being used in large numbers, some by users for the first time.
“Many of these appliances will be new, and owners may not be aware of the potential danger,” Mr De Groot said.
“When using gas, always ensure you use your portable gas refrigerator in a well ventilated and open area.”
