A caf-themed candle gave off more than the aroma of coffee when the flammable coffee beans contained within it ignited and almost caused a fire.
Consumers are being urged to not to use the cup and saucer-shaped candles marketed as “Caf Aroma Candle”. Instead, consumers should return the item to its place of purchase for a refund.
Consumer Protection Commissioner Patrick Walker said a consumer lit one of the candles and, after about two hours, the coffee beans in the candle ignited.
“Fortunately, the consumer was able to extinguish the flame before any damage was done and alerted the Department to the problem,” Mr Walker said.
Tests conducted by Consumer Protection’s Product Safety Unit found that the coffee beans were flammable.
The candles were imported into Australia by NSW-based Lanshing Pty Ltd and sold through various retail stores. The candles were sold in a set of two and priced from $4 to $6. Lanshing has agreed to a voluntary recall of the product.
Mr Walker said a number of candles with flammable holders or surrounds had been recalled in the past year including tealight candles with plastic flammable holders.
“Candlesticks and candleholders which cannot withstand the heat of a flame without burning or melting are banned in Western Australia,” Mr Walker said. “The maximum penalty for selling banned products is $20,000 for an individual and $100,000 for a corporation.
“Our Product Safety officers will continue to inspect stores for unsafe candles and ensure these are removed from sale,” Mr Walker said. “However I urge consumers to be cautious when using candles and to never leave a burning candle unattended.”
