Gas Fitter Fined

Consumers Should Use Only Licensed Plumbers

A Rangeway gas fitter being fined in the Geraldton Magistrates Court (Geraldton Guardian 8-3-04) has prompted the Plumbers Licensing Board to caution consumers about using unlicensed trades people, whilst dispelling myths about who can legally perform plumbing work.

The gas fitter who was convicted of conducting water supply plumbing work without a licence told the court that this was tolerated within the industry.

"It is important for consumers to be confident they are receiving plumbing services from a properly qualified and licensed person", Plumbers Licensing Board Chairperson Thomas Hall said.

"Whilst gas fitters may hold the view that connecting the water supply to a hot water unit is a simple task within their abilities, it is against the law.

"Although it appears that some gas fitters believe they can undertake minor plumbing work such as reconnections, this is not the case", Mr Hall said.

WA regulations provide that only licensed plumbing contractors or licensed tradespersons working under the general direction and control of a licensed plumbing contractor can perform plumbing work in this state.

"What may have been an unofficial practice in the early 1990s is not lawful. Unlicensed persons must not undertake plumbing work and anyone doing so can expect prosecution", he said.

Moves to introduce a restricted plumbing licence have not been supported by the Board due to protecting public safety.

Any consumer arranging to have plumbing work carried out should ensure that their intended plumber is licensed with the Plumbers Licensing Board by asking to see their licence identification card.

Information on licensed plumbers can be obtained by telephoning the Board on 9282 0478.
