WorkSafe has expressed concern about a letter being sent to WA businesses urging them to purchase a first aid kit in order to comply with occupational safety and health legislation.
WorkSafe Acting Executive Director Nina Lyhne said today that although the letter from a company called Employment Protection Australia sounds official, people should not feel compelled to purchase one of the first aid kits.
“This letter implies that companies could leave themselves open to a $25,000 fine if they do not purchase one of the first aid kits offered,” Ms Lyhne said.
“The fact of the matter is that first aid kits are required in workplaces, and have been for many years.
“But the legislation does not stipulate what they need to contain, requiring only that they must contain the basic requirements and additional items appropriate to a workplace.”
The Commission for Occupational Safety and Health has published a Code of Practice that covers first aid facilities and services, workplace amenities and facilities and personal protective clothing and equipment.
This code outlines the requirements for first aid equipment under the Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations.
“I would strongly advise everyone to ensure that they have a first aid kit suitable for their workplace,” Ms Lyhne said.
