WorkSafe inspectors are conducting an inspection program this month to make sure that workplaces are controlling hazardous dusts, fumes and fibres.
WorkSafe Acting Executive Director Nina Lyhne said today that these hazards were prevalent in WA workplaces.
“WA’s occupational safety and health legislation requires that all potential workplace hazards are identified, the risks assessed and controls put into place.
“Dusts, fumes and fibres can be a particular problem because their effects often become evident only after months or even years of exposure.”
Some examples of dusts, fumes and fibres in workplaces are silica in the construction industry, welding fumes in construction and metal fabrication, flour in the food industry, wood dust in milling, carpentry and cabinet making and asbestos in the vehicle repair industry.
All these substances can potentially result in lung and other diseases at a later date, with some diseases such as lung cancers occurring many years after exposure.
“WorkSafe inspectors will be taking particular note of these issues whenever they are in a workplace, regardless of the purpose of their visit,” Ms Lyhne said.
“I encourage everyone to ensure that all dusts, fumes and fibre hazards are identified, the risks assessed, controls put into place and all staff adequately trained.”
