Warning issued on LP gas

The State's energy regulator has issued a warning on the safe use of gas in caravans after a man was seriously injured in an explosion at Katanning.

The young farmhand suffered severe burns when leaking LP gas ignited when he lit a cigarette in the caravan.

Director of Energy Safety Albert Koenig said the explosion was probably the result of a leaking gas line or valve.

"Our investigation into the incident is not yet complete, but early indications and previous experience point to a leak in a line or valve which has resulted in a vapour cloud within the caravan. The gas ignited when the cigarette was lit," Mr Koenig said.

"It is important that people staying in caravans acquaint themselves with the odour of unburnt LP gas to assist in the early detection of leaks.

"It is also important that an authorised gas fitter regularly checks the LP gas installation and any connected appliances.

"Cooking appliances and stoves should be used only for the purpose for which they are designed, and not as room heaters, and for heating purposes in a caravan, gas heaters must be fitted with a flue to the outside.

"Caravan occupiers should always ensure the permanent ventilation to the inside of the caravan is not obstructed.

"This tragic incident is a timely reminder of the hazards associated with gas vapour, and we encourage anyone with portable gas appliances - not just those in caravans - to be especially vigilant."
