The State Government is seeking public comment on the working hours of WA employees.
Department of Consumer and Employment Protection Director General Brian Bradley said today that the impact of extended working hours had become an important social and community issue in this State.
"Consistent with the State Government's election commitment, a review panel to examine the effects of long working hours has been established and a discussion paper has been released for public comment," Mr Bradley said.
The discussion paper provides important background and supporting information and also identifies a range of possible approaches for addressing extended working hours.
"The Extended Working Hours Review Panel will receive and consider public comment on this issue and make recommendations to the State Government on potential improvements to the State's safety and health framework to address extended working hours."
Copies of the discussion paper can be obtained by telephoning the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection on 9282 0489, or on the website at www.docep.wa.gov.au. The closing date for submissions is 31 October 2003.
"The issue of extended working hours is crucial to the safety and health of workers in this state, and I encourage interested parties to make a submission," Mr Bradley said.
"I can assure anyone who does that their comments will be fully considered, and that those who participate will be making an important contribution to improving occupational safety and health in Western Australia."
