FuelWatch to prosecute BP for not displaying prices

Consumer Protection Commissioner Pat Walker said today the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection would prosecute fuel major BP for not displaying terminal prices.

“BP is required to display spot prices for each type of motor fuel supplied from Kewdale terminal, including the weighted average price for each product and any maximum price,” said Mr Walker.

“BP didn’t fulfill its obligations under the Petroleum Products Pricing Act on two occasions last September, ” Mr Walker said.

“I’m very concerned about the apparent disregard shown by BP in complying with this legislation,” he said.

“Part lllA of the Act is intended to establish a true Terminal Gate Price system in WA.

“The law aims to increase competition at the wholesale level by providing one price at which fuel retailers can make spot purchases, without having to enter into long-term commercial agreements with suppliers,” Mr Walker said.

The legislation also sought to increase transparency at the wholesale level of fuel marketing in WA, benefiting retailers and, ultimately, consumers.

A hearing date for the charges is yet to be set.

The department administers the Petroleum Products Pricing Act and operates the FuelWatch information service.

PLEASE NOTE: THE DEPARTMENT WILL NOT BE PROVIDING INTERVIEWS ON THIS MATTER
