Trampolines

New trampolines as Christmas gifts can be the cause of injury if parents and children don't understand the rules of safe use.

"About 150 children each year receive treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital following trampoline accidents", Commissioner for Consumer Protection Patrick Walker said.

"Most accidents relate to children under 15 however common sense should apply to everyone using trampolines including adults, who should avoid consuming alcohol if intending to use one.

"Trampolines, if used sensibly can be the source of a lot of fun", he said.

When using a trampoline:

* Supervise children under six at all times

* Only one person at a time should use the trampoline

* Ensure safety pads completely cover springs, hooks and the frame

* Bounce only near the centre of the mat and step on and off the trampoline

* Don't allow people to sit or lean on the frame when the trampoline is in use as this can limit the frame's natural flexibility and warp it

* If your children want to try risky moves like somersaults, take them to a gymnasium where they can be taught and supervised by trained professionals

* Ensure a safe zone of sand or wood chips is provided and free from obstructions including those overhead such as branches and clothes lines

"Don't spoil your holidays this year by having a trampoline accident. Buy and use trampolines wisely. If you require further advice or information on trampoline standards call us on 1 300 30 40 54", Mr. Walker said.
