Discussion paper released on motor vehicle repairers

The Ministry of Fair Trading has released a discussion paper seeking comment on a proposal to establish a new motor vehicle industry board.

The board would have responsibility for the regulation of both the motor vehicle repair industry and the motor vehicle sales industry.

Currently the motor vehicle sales industry is regulated by the Motor Vehicle Dealers Licensing Board, while motor vehicle repairers are not regulated. The Gallop Government gave a pre-election commitment to regulate repairers.

Commissioner for Fair Trading Patrick Walker said that a new board would have responsibility for:

 - licensing and registering people in the motor vehicle sales and repair industries;

 - setting minimum equipment standards for repairers;

 - setting industry training standards; and

 - disciplinary action.

The discussion paper also raises issues relating to licence and registration fees for repairers.

Submissions close on the Friday July 6, 2001.
