Don't end up broken hearted this Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day looming, consumers are advised to choose introduction agencies carefully to avoid disappointment.

The Ministry of Fair Trading receives regular complaints from consumers who have become disgruntled after dealing with an agency.

Commissioner for Fair Trading, Patrick Walker, said companies providing such services had certain legal obligations.

“Introduction agencies, like all service providers, must exercise due skill and care when fulfilling their contractual obligations. However meeting customer demands is difficult because the choice of compatible partners is entirely subjective and there is no guarantee you will find someone suitable.”

The Ministry of Fair Trading gives the following advice when choosing a service provider:

 - Shop around as fees charged may vary widely between agencies;
 - Look for a reputable agency;
 - Choose a registered business with a street address;
 - Ask what level of service is provided;
 - Find out how many people they have in your preferred age group and locality;
 - Find out how many introductions will be made;
 - Discuss the payment method and period of payment;
 - Find out how the agency's refund policy and complaint service work;

Avoid the following:

 - Verbal contracts. Insist on a written contract;
 - Long contract periods;
 - High pressure sales tactics;
 - Pressure to upgrade your services to improve chances of good a match;
 - No refunds policy.

“Consumers must be realistic in their expectations of introduction agencies. They can expect introductions to be made, but the agency cannot be held responsible if an appropriate match is not found,” warned Mr Walker.
