The Ministry of Fair Trading is currently reviewing the Debt Collectors Licensing Act 1964 in accordance with National Competition Policy (NCP) guidelines.
Commissioner for Fair Trading, Patrick Walker explained that NCP guidelines place an obligation on all States to review legislation that impacts on competition.
"A discussion paper has been prepared to assist stakeholders and other interested parties to make a formal submission to the review," said Mr Walker.
The discussion paper outlines the concepts of NCP and the provisions of the Debt Collectors Licensing Act which are under examination. The paper also outlines various options for the future regulation of the debt collection industry in accordance with NCP principles.
The Ministry of Fair Trading invites interested parties to provide a submission to the review of the Debt Collectors Licensing Act, by 27th October 2000.
