Who needs a licence

  • In order to carry out motor vehicle dealing in Western Australia a person muct have a Motor Vehicle Dealer's Licence.

Dealing in motor vehicles means:

    • carrying on any class or description of buying or selling vehicles
    • acting as an agent for other people in relation to buying or selling motor vehicles( including selling by auction)
    • acting as a financier or operating a car rental business.
  • Anyone who is employed or engaged by or on behalf of a dealer to manage or supervise that dealer's business of buying or selling vehicles at one of the dealers premises must apply for a Yard Managers licence
  • Anyone who is employed or engaged by or on behalf of a dealer in the buying or selling of motor vehicles other than in the capacity of yard manager needs to apply for a Motor Vehicle Salesperson's licence.
  • Anyone who carries on the business of providing premises for a car market ( wheter or not those premises are used for any other purpose) needs to apply for a Car Market Operator's Licence.

Conditions and restrictions may apply to any licence

Any dealer wishing to sell a motor vehicle under a consignment agreement must open a trust account with a prescribed financial institution, the details of which must then be advised to the Motor Vehicles licensing branch. A Registered Company Auditor must be appointed to audit the trust account and the auditor details must also be advised to the Motor Vehicles licensing branch. The trust account must be audited at least once in each 12 month period.
