Description of the classes of repair work

Class of repair work and description

The following information outlines the Classes of Repair Work prescribed under the Motor Vehicle Repairers Act 2003, Motor Vehicle Repairers Regulations 2007 and Motor Vehicle Repairers Amendment Regulations 2008 for which a person can be certified and/or obtain a Motor Vehicle Repair Business Licence.

As a guide we have included (under the Class of Repair Work) the current Australian Educational Training Package (AUR99 or AUR05 equivalent) qualification that you could use to obtain certification. (Note: you may use your relevant qualifications and experience obtained before the commencement of the AUR training package.)

Remember also to refer to the 'Qualifications and Experience' information. The Motor Vehicle Industry Board (the Board) will consider a combination of things for you to be able to qualify for a Motor Vehicle Repairer's Certificate - not just educational qualifications.

An autogas system can be fuelled by liquid petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) or hydrogen (H2).

For the purposes of the licensing of repair businesses ‘Autogas work’ is prescribed as another class of repair work.

This class of repair work is NOT to apply to the certification of individual repairers, as any individual who performs work on autogas systems (but not the business itself) is currently required to hold a permit under the Gas Standards Act 1992.

All licences pertaining to autogas work are to be issued with the conditions that:

  • all authorised premises under the licence must comply with Australian Standard AS 2746 – 1999: Working areas for gas fuelled vehicles; and
  • the licensee must employ at least one person with a valid and suitably endorsed Class E permit issued by EnergySafety to perform autogas repair work.
